Ukraine Offers Free Sperm Freezing to Soldiers Amid Demographic Concerns

(MENAFN) Maxim, a 35-year-old soldier with Ukraine’s National Guard, openly discusses his sperm, emphasizing the importance of fertility for the nation’s future, as stated by reports.

"Our men are dying. The Ukrainian gene pool is dying. This is about the survival of our nation," he said, speaking from the eastern frontline.

During a recent leave, Maxim’s wife convinced him to visit a clinic in Kyiv and donate a sperm sample. It was frozen free of charge under a program designed to help serving soldiers. If Maxim were killed, his wife could use the sample to try to have the child they have long wanted.

"Whether you are right on the 'zero point' of the frontline, or 30 or even 80 kilometres back, there is no guarantee that you're safe," he said, explaining that Russian drones overhead are a constant threat. "That means stress, and this [can have] an impact: your reproductive ability declines. So we have to think about the future and the future of our Ukrainian nation."

Private fertility clinics began offering crypto preservation for servicemen and women in 2022, at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, allowing them to freeze sperm or eggs in case of injury or fertility loss.

In 2023, Ukraine’s parliament regulated the practice and provided state funding.

"Our soldiers are defending our future, but may lose their own, so we wanted to give them that chance," said MP Oksana Dmitrieva, who helped draft the law. "It's to support them, so they can use their sperm later."
