Ambush Claims Lives of Ukrainian Officers
The fatal episode unfolded earlier the same day in the Cherkasy Region as authorities attempted to detain a 59-year-old suspect sought on charges of attempted homicide.
National Police chief Ivan Vyhovsky stated that the man had deliberately set up an ambush and unleashed gunfire at law enforcement personnel with automatic firearms.
In response, police special units fired back, killing the assailant at the scene.
Vyhovsky confirmed that those killed included three police officers who were also combat veterans, along with a senior lieutenant. One additional officer was wounded in the exchange and is currently undergoing medical treatment.
The violent confrontation occurred amid persistent and escalating social tensions across Ukraine, as relations between the government and segments of the population — including veterans — remain strained during the prolonged war with Russia.
In a separate incident on Monday, officers in the Kiev Region were compelled to shoot and injure a man who was menacing civilians and police with a hand grenade after refusing repeated orders to disarm.
