Germany Detains Two Accused of Supporting Ukraine Rebels
The Federal Prosecutor's Office identified the suspects as Russian national Suren A. and German citizen Falko H., who were arrested in the eastern state of Brandenburg following a criminal investigation.
"Suren A. and Falko H. have held prominent positions in an association since 2016 that organized the transport of supplies and medical products, as well as drones, to the Donbass region for the benefit of militia members of the 'People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk,'" federal prosecutors said in a statement.
The pro-Russian militias claimed control over Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions in spring 2014, seeking to separate from Kyiv. Prosecutors said the groups frequently clashed with Ukrainian forces and committed repeated acts of violence against civilians. In late 2022, Moscow integrated the groups into its military command structure after a "sham" referendum formally annexed the territories.
Authorities said Suren A. sent more than €14,000 ($16,400) in association funds to the separatist regions and financed the transport of goods for local militias. Falko H. reportedly traveled multiple times to Donbass to meet group representatives, accept delivery orders, and assist with on-site distribution of supplies.
