Starmer, Trump discuss efforts to end Russia-Ukraine war
As stated by the UK leader’s office, the two spoke by phone on Sunday afternoon and exchanged views on diplomatic initiatives aimed at stopping the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. During the call, Starmer outlined ongoing coordination among allied countries working to support a future settlement.
"The Prime Minister updated on work by the Coalition of the Willing to support any peace deal and ensure a just and lasting end to the hostilities," the statement said.
The conversation followed a virtual meeting co-chaired by Starmer last week involving the Coalition of the Willing, where participants agreed that the current phase represents a critical juncture for Ukraine, its population, and the broader security of the Euro-Atlantic region.
The two leaders also addressed developments in Gaza, where reports indicate that more than 71,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations since October 2023. Despite a ceasefire that came into force on Oct. 10, Israeli authorities have continued to breach the agreement by not permitting the agreed volume of medical aid trucks to enter the territory, worsening what health officials have described as a severe and continuing medical crisis.
According to the statement, Starmer also briefed Trump on the appointment of a new British ambassador to Washington, noting that the decision is expected to further strengthen ties between the two countries.
As stated by reports, the British government confirmed the appointment of Christian Turner as ambassador to the United States on Thursday, replacing Peter Mandelson, who was removed from the post in September following controversy surrounding his connections to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
